OVERVIEW
This SOP establishes fair and realistic expectations for evaluating grooming students and recent graduates. Completing a grooming program demonstrates that training was completed, but it does not necessarily indicate the speed, confidence, equipment familiarity, judgment, or real-world experience of an established groomer. The SOP focuses on understanding the applicant's training background while recognizing the importance of foundational skills, attitude, reliability, willingness to learn, and safe handling.
The process provides a structured way to review education, verify information with permission, conduct an appropriate practical evaluation, assess equipment needs, and determine supervision and service limits. It also addresses how to plan a realistic initial role and development process, including written 30-, 60-, and 90-day priorities. Candidate records, practical evaluations, equipment plans, and service limits can help owners and managers make hiring decisions based on observed ability and trainability rather than relying only on certificates or photographs.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
- How to review a student's educational and hands-on training background
- How to distinguish claimed training, verified experience, certifications, and skills still being developed
- How to evaluate foundational handling, bathing, drying, brushing, preparation, and equipment skills
- How to conduct a practical evaluation appropriate to the student's stated experience
- How to assess attitude, reliability, willingness to learn, teamwork, and response to correction
- How to determine appropriate equipment responsibilities between the student and the business
- How to establish supervision plans and initial service limits
- How to verify references or training information with appropriate permission
- How to create realistic development priorities for a new student or graduate

BUSINESS BENEFITS
A structured student evaluation process helps owners and managers make more consistent hiring and development decisions. Reviewing training history, practical skills, attitude, trainability, equipment, supervision needs, and service limits provides a broader assessment than relying on certificates or portfolios alone. Written expectations help clarify the student's role, duties, pay, classification, schedule, supervision, and allowed services. Documenting practical evaluations, equipment plans, development priorities, and service limits also creates clearer accountability as the student develops within the business.

IMPLEMENTATION NOTES
Implement this SOP during application review, interviews, practical evaluations, and initial employment planning. Review the applicant's training source, hands-on experience, curriculum, skills, equipment, and references, using permission where required. Conduct a safe practical evaluation appropriate to the applicant's level and observe the full process rather than only the haircut. Assess trainability, attitude, handling, basic skills, and response to correction. Clearly establish equipment responsibilities, supervision, service limits, title, duties, pay, classification, schedule, and development priorities before the employee begins work.
