OVERVIEW
Moving from grooming school into a working shop requires more than technical grooming knowledge. A graduate must learn how a specific business handles client service, scheduling, documentation, teamwork, productivity, safety, equipment, cleaning, quality control, and the movement of pets through the appointment. This SOP provides a planned adjustment period beginning after the hiring decision rather than repeating the candidate evaluation process.
The transition is organized around clear milestones: preparation before the first day, first-day orientation, first-week integration, the first 30 days, days 31–60, and days 61–90. Graduates begin with appropriate service limits and supervision, learn the shop's systems and workflow, receive regular coaching, and demonstrate safe and consistent performance before responsibility increases.
The procedure also emphasizes consistent direction through an assigned primary mentor. Progress is based on observed handling, quality, communication, workflow, and dependability rather than staffing pressure or the simple passage of time. Documentation provides a record of coaching, milestone reviews, training, and decisions about continued supervision or independent duties.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
- How to prepare a graduate for their first day in a working grooming shop.
- How to introduce facility, safety, emergency, and workplace procedures.
- How to teach the shop's complete client and pet flow.
- How to establish appropriate service limits and supervision levels.
- How to structure the first week around safe integration rather than maximum speed.
- How to build consistency during the first 30 days.
- How to increase responsibility based on demonstrated performance.
- How to conduct 30-, 60-, and 90-day milestone reviews.
- How to provide consistent coaching and document repeated corrections.
- How to determine when a graduate is ready for specific independent responsibilities.
BUSINESS BENEFITS
This SOP creates a structured onboarding process that helps graduates understand how the shop's systems, client expectations, pet flow, safety practices, quality standards, and workplace responsibilities fit together. It supports consistent coaching by assigning a primary mentor and documenting daily or planned reviews. Milestone records help management make responsibility decisions based on observed performance rather than staffing pressure. Clear service limits, supervision levels, quality reviews, and documented transition decisions also provide greater consistency and accountability throughout the employee's first 90 days.

IMPLEMENTATION NOTES
Implement this SOP before the graduate's first day by confirming the role, schedule, pay structure, reporting relationship, system access, equipment, required forms, trainer assignment, and initial work plan. Begin with facility and safety orientation, then teach the complete client and pet flow before assigning controlled work. Use a primary mentor for consistent direction, conduct daily or planned reviews, and document progress and concerns. Increase responsibility only after handling, quality, communication, workflow, and dependability are consistently demonstrated. Use the Academy to Shop Transition Record and related SOPs 10.07, 10.09, and 10.10 where applicable.
