OVERVIEW
Fleas and other parasites can spread quickly through grooming areas, kennels, tools, towels, floors, tubs, and other surfaces. This SOP establishes a consistent response when parasites are disclosed before an appointment or discovered during grooming, bathing, drying, or holding.
The procedure addresses fleas, flea dirt, ticks, suspected lice, mites or mange, worms, tapeworm segments, and other possible parasite concerns. It explains how to minimize contact with other pets, isolate contaminated materials, clean affected areas, handle tools and laundry, notify clients and management, and recommend veterinary follow-up when appropriate.
The SOP also provides guidance for client education, flea treatment fees, documentation, and communication when staff observe possible parasites without making a medical diagnosis.

Implement this SOP as part of the salon's check-in, grooming, sanitation, and incident-response workflow. Staff should follow the applicable parasite procedure when concerns are disclosed or discovered, minimize unnecessary contact with other pets, contain contaminated materials, clean affected areas, notify the appropriate personnel, and document the response. Use the Flea, Tick, and Parasite Response Checklist and related SOPs and forms identified in the document. Staff should not diagnose medical conditions and should recommend veterinary evaluation when appropriate.
