OVERVIEW
The Collapse, Fainting, and Loss of Consciousness Response SOP establishes a consistent process for responding when a pet suddenly collapses, becomes weak, has difficulty standing, faints, becomes limp, appears disoriented or unresponsive, or loses consciousness during grooming or pet care.
The procedure focuses on protecting the pet from additional injury, stopping grooming, removing or turning off equipment when safe, reducing stimulation, monitoring breathing and responsiveness, and notifying management and the owner. Staff are instructed to document what they observe rather than attempting to determine or diagnose the cause.
It also provides guidance for owner communication, grooming discontinuation, veterinary evaluation, emergency veterinary care considerations, future grooming requirements, and factual incident documentation.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
- How to respond when a pet suddenly collapses or loses consciousness.
- How to stop grooming and remove nearby equipment safely.

- When grooming should not continue after an episode.
- How to document observations without making a medical diagnosis.
BUSINESS BENEFITS
This SOP provides staff with a standardized response for collapse, fainting, sudden weakness, and loss of consciousness. It establishes consistent expectations for stopping grooming, protecting the pet, reducing stimulation, notifying management and owners, considering veterinary care, and documenting the event. The procedure also helps maintain factual records by directing employees to document observations rather than diagnose the cause. Clear grooming and future appointment guidance supports consistent management decisions following a significant event.

IMPLEMENTATION NOTES
Use this SOP whenever a pet collapses, faints, becomes suddenly weak, or loses consciousness before, during, or after grooming or pet care. Staff should stop grooming immediately, protect the pet, minimize stimulation, monitor the pet, notify management, and contact the owner. Use the related Incident Report Form and Collapse or Fainting Response Checklist to document the event. Follow SOP 2.16: Emergency Veterinary Transport Procedure if emergency transport is necessary. Management should determine whether the pet is released, evaluated by a veterinarian, requires veterinary clearance, or needs a modified future grooming plan.
