OVERVIEW
This combined SOP system establishes a consistent approach to bringing employees into a grooming business, developing their skills, evaluating competency, addressing performance concerns, and supervising learners on the grooming floor. New Employee Onboarding provides a structured process for introducing employees to salon operations, reporting relationships, training requirements, safety, workflow, communication, and documentation before independent work. The bather and groomer procedures then establish documented methods for evaluating practical skills and determining which duties an employee is ready to perform independently.
The system also provides a defined approach to performance coaching and supervised academy-floor training. Coaching focuses on identifying the written standard, explaining expectations, demonstrating or practicing the correct method when needed, setting measurable expectations, documenting progress, and scheduling follow-up. Academy-floor procedures establish learner responsibilities, supervision limits, competency-based assignments, and documentation of training hours, services, coaching, and progress. Together, these procedures create a repeatable framework for training and evaluating staff rather than relying on informal or inconsistent instruction.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
- How to onboard new salon employees with clear expectations, reporting relationships, training requirements, and documentation.
- How to structure bather training from instruction and supervised practice toward consistent independent performance.
- How to evaluate handling, bathing, drying, coat preparation, observation, communication, documentation, quality, and productivity skills.
- How to determine which grooming duties an employee can perform independently and which require supervision or additional training.
- How to evaluate groomer knowledge, technical ability, judgment, workflow, communication, and readiness for independent work.
- How to document groomer skill evaluations, restrictions, development needs, and final approval decisions.
- How to conduct performance coaching using observed facts, written standards, measurable expectations, demonstration, practice, and follow-up.
- How to distinguish training or performance concerns from situations requiring escalation or another corrective process.
- How to assign and supervise academy students, apprentices, trainees, and other learners according to demonstrated competency.
- How to document employee training, competency reviews, coaching, learner progress, and approval limits.
BUSINESS BENEFITS
The system creates greater consistency in how employees are onboarded, trained, evaluated, coached, and approved for independent work. It provides documented standards for competency, role responsibilities, training limits, performance expectations, and follow-up. Structured evaluation helps match assignments to demonstrated skills, identify training needs, document independent-work approval, and maintain consistent grooming standards. Performance coaching provides a documented process for explaining expectations, checking understanding, measuring improvement, and recording follow-up. The academy-floor procedure also helps maintain clear instructor responsibility and separate supervised education from ordinary staffing and production expectations.

IMPLEMENTATION NOTES
Implement these procedures as one connected staff-development process. Use SOP 4.01 when a new employee or trainee begins work, then apply the appropriate training and competency standards from SOP 4.02 and skill evaluation requirements from SOP 4.03. Use the documented coaching process in SOP 4.07 when performance concerns, skill development, quality issues, communication gaps, or other appropriate coaching situations arise. For students, apprentices, and other learners, use SOP 4.11 to define assignments, supervision, competency limits, and documentation. The related job descriptions, employment-terms agreements, development acknowledgements, evaluation records, checklists, and sign-offs should be completed and maintained with the applicable employee or learner records.
